About the Region
The Unique Charms of Japan’s Thousand Year Capital
Kyoto’s long colorful history has left a legacy of shrines, temples, and palaces, as well as many charming neighborhoods with old townhouses and shops lining narrow cobblestone streets where townsfolk and visitors have mingled and walked for centuries.
Wandering the Narrow Cobblestone Streets of Higashiyama
One of the most beloved historic districts in all of Kyoto is Higashiyama, which occupies the eastern hills of the city. Strolling its narrow streets, some still paved with cobblestones, you can ascend to the iconic temple of Kiyomizu-dera, visit the beautiful grounds of Yasaka Shrine in Gion, or peruse the many attractive shops, galleries, and gardens that help preserve the area’s authentic feel and character. When night falls, lanterns cast their soft glow, and the streets of Higashiyama transform into something even more magical and timeless.
