[Experiential Stay] Seto Inland Cruising, Pilgrimage Hiking, and Private Villa Relaxation in Shodoshima
Overview
Shodoshima is a placid rural island in the Seto Inland Sea of villages, mountainscapes, and olive fields that manages to feel like a remote getaway from the built-up urban landscapes of the mainland despite being easily accessible from the Kyoto-Osaka metro area via shinkansen or ferry. The journey itself is an escape into the romantic serenity of crossing the Seto Inland Sea by boat. Nestled here among coastal orchards, private villa Oboro & Tororo welcomes just one group per day to a stay immersed in peaceful panoramas of the islet-jeweled waters. From fishing and island tours led by the villa’s owner to an ohenro pilgrimage hike guided by a temple priest, its guests enjoy experiences unique to the region. About the Region
The Nature and Stillness of Shodoshima, a Boat’s Ride Across the Serene Seto Sea
No bridge connects Kagawa Prefecture’s Shodoshima to the mainland. Set off on a leisurely sea crossing over the Seto Inland Sea, dotted by islands large and small which float by like jewels on the placid waters as you pass.
Oboro & Tororo has been renovated from a former food processing plant which produced two finely processed local specialty forms of kelp known as oboro and tororo. Today it is an exceptional private space standing in a seaside village neighborhood without convenience stores or other commercial facilities, filled instead with the sound of waves and birdsong.
A Serene Earth-Toned Space that Brings Out the Colors of Sea and Sky
Oboro & Tororo interiors are designed in holistic earth tones designed in naturalistic deference to the vivid blue of the sea and sky outside the windows. This is grounded and refined luxury rather than ornate and ostentatious opulence: a clean space thoughtfully composed where natural light and scenery can be relished with all five senses. Let Shodoshima transport you far from the clamor of daily life as only the island can, and savor a stay that allows you to return to the real you.

A Stay with a Sense of Place
An Island Kitchen Becomes the Island Villa’s Cozy Gathering Point
At the heart of the villa lies a spacious living, dining and kitchen area centered around an island counter whose ambient floor lighting gives it the appearance of a solid block of stone floating otherworldly in midair. This is a place for daily congregation, where guests can cook together, eat together, share a drink, plan a day, debrief on the trip so far, or simply sit and enjoy a good conversation. Its bathing facilities are another highlight, including a first-floor shower room designed for easy access coming back in from the sea, and a spacious second-floor bathroom freshened by sea breeze.

Views of Sea and Moon from the Second-Floor Main Room
The second floor offers a front-row seat to the sea through a large east-facing window. To heighten the sense of escape from the everyday, the room has intentionally been designed without curtains* to foster waking naturally with the sunrise and the joy of basking under the full moon. Lucky guests may encounter the mystical “moon road” effect, when moonlight stretches across the surface of the sea in a seemingly interminable line. Enjoy a view so beautiful it feels like a painting framed by the window.
*Lace curtains are available to soften daytime sunlight during consecutive-night stays.

Four Distinctive Bedrooms for Comfort with Friends and Family
Oboro & Tororo accommodates up to 10 guests across four bedrooms, each with its own character. In addition to the main bedroom, there is a first-floor room with two Western-style semi-double beds, a second-floor tatami room with four Japanese-style futon sets, and a second-floor hideaway with a raised sleeping platform featuring two futon sets under a cozy sloped ceiling. Each room offers its own distinct style of comfort, privacy, and luxurious relaxation.

Moments at the Table
Savoring the Bounties of Shodoshima (Additional Option)
Oboro & Tororo also offers guests the chance to fully enjoy ingredients nurtured by the climate of the Seto Inland Sea. Wabunka-exclusive dinner options include Olive Beef, Kagawa’s premium brand of wagyu beef raised on feed containing pressed olive pulp, prepared for BBQ or shabu-shabu hotpot. Alternatively, shabu-shabu can also be prepared with island hamo (conger pike), a prized summer fish of the Seto Inland Sea. With wine pairings carefully selected by a sommelier from a local wine shop, enjoy an intimate dinner in the villa’s atmospheric dining kitchen.

Breakfast made with fresh local ingredients is also available as an advance-reservation option. Choose from Japanese or Western breakfast styles, delivered directly to your room. Begin the day nourished and refreshed as you gaze out over the sea sparkling in the morning sun.

Deepen Your Connection to the Region
Take in Island Vistas from the Water, and Discover the Ohenro Pilgrimage Culture of Japan(Additional Option)
During your stay, discover Shodoshima’s nature and culture from both sea and land through Wabunka-exclusive optional add-on experiences. Natural gifts abound on this small island blessed with abundant sunlight, born of the sea and faith rooted in its forests. Experience unforgettable moments only Wabunka can offer, far beyond ordinary sightseeing.

*Please note that these two optional experiences cannot be booked concurrently.
A Leisurely Island Fishing Cruise (Additional Option)
A Fishing and Cruise Experience takes guests aboard a small recreational fishing boat personally captained by the villa owner for on-the-water vistas of the Seto Inland Sea unlike anything visible from a ferry or high-speed boat. Enjoy catch-and-release fishing and guidance to such scenic spots as the far side of the nearby islets of Hanasuwajima, where rocky cliffs and caves rise dramatically from the water, or Fukubejima, home to wild monkeys.
*Please wear clothes that are easy to move in and which you do not mind getting dirty, as well as non-slip shoes for the fishing experience.
* This experience is available from June to October only.

A Pilgrimage Experience into Japan’s Ancient Spiritual World (Additional Option)
An ohenro pilgrimage hike experience is also recommended for those who wish to visit part of Shodoshima’s traditional Eighty-Eight Sacred Sites. Donning the traditional white garments of Japan’s pilgrims, walk nature-rich mountain paths guided by the priest of a local temple. This is an authentic, soul-cleansing experience that offers a taste of Japanese spirituality and sense of accomplishment.
*Please wear comfortable walking shoes for the ohenro hike.
*This experience is available from December to May only.

A Rediscovery of Self through Island Culture – and a Distinctly Japanese View on the Natural World
On the island of Shodoshima, nature remains vivid and close at hand. Crossing the waters of the Seto Sea for a stay at its villa retreat Oboro & Tororo is about far more than comfortable lodgings. Colors of sea and sky shift moment by moment and sloshing waves accentuate the stillness of the coast. Cruise the sea guided by the villa owner who knows it intimately, and delight the island’s rich edible bounties to leave the clamor of everyday life far behind and embrace the present moment.

Warm encounters with locals, including an ohenro hike led by a temple priest, offer a deep experience of island life and the central coexistence with nature and spirituality that people here have cherished since ancient times. Based at a gorgeous private villa, savor relaxation that reconnects you with you, and a Japanese aesthetic of subtlety a world apart from the flashy neon glitz of the country’s urban centers.
