Exclusive Tour of Gesshin-in Temple: Linked to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Wife
The route from Yasaka Shrine to Kiyomizu Temple is one of Kyoto’s top sightseeing spots. Known as Nene-no-michi (The Path of Nene), this lively cobblestone footpath passes by Kodaiji Temple and is linked to the famous samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his wife Kita no Mandokoro, who was also known as Nene.
Gesshin-in Temple, situated along Nene-no-michi, is one of Kodaiji’s sub-temples, constructed in 1616. Legend has it that Masanori Kamei, the feudal lord of Tsuwano in Shimane Prefecture, built the temple here due to his friendship with Kita no Mantodoro, who lived in Entokuin near Kodaiji Temple.
Entering the serene grounds of Gesshin-in from the busy Nene-no-michi, you will be struck by the peaceful atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling outside world. Despite over 400 years since its construction, Gesshin-in has remained unscathed by fire or other disasters, retaining its original appearance with occasional repairs. Normally closed to the public, the main hall, where zazen meditation takes place, and the lush garden offer a glimpse of the iconic Yasaka Pagoda. Anticipation runs high for this unique space, rarely encountered in typical Kyoto sightseeing.
Zazen in the Main Hall with Yasaka Pagoda View
Your experience begins with zazen meditation. Prior to the actual practice, the priest provides guidance on posture, leg crossing, breathing techniques, and more, ensuring even beginners feel comfortable. Two zazen sessions are held, with a break in between for questions and answers. This allows you to address any concerns from the first session and approach the second session with a clearer, more focused mind.
Following zazen, the priest will guide you through the garden. The sprawling lawn features the renowned camellia "Uraku Tsubaki" (camellia japonica), propagated from a camellia found in the residence of Nobunaga Oda’s younger brother. Nobunaga Oda was a powerful Sengoku warlord who was served by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Take pleasure in the seasonal flora, capture unique angles of the Yasaka Pagoda, and leisurely explore at your own pace.
Akagane Resort Kyoto Higashiyama 1925, a Renovated Hideaway Restaurant
After zazen, you have the option to dine at Akagane Resort Kyoto Higashiyama 1925, a secluded restaurant housed in a renovated businessman's mansion (additional charge applies).
From Gesshin-in, follow the Nene-no-michi towards the Yasaka Pagoda. Situated near the pagoda, Akagane Resort Kyoto Higashiyama 1925 is, as the name "Akagane" suggests, a hidden gem transformed from the former residence of a copper (akagane) processing company owner. Despite its secluded setting in a forest, its grand entrance reveals a verdant garden and approach illuminated by the sun's reflection off the greenery and copper accents, capturing the attention of passers-by.
Lunch in a Beautiful, Heartwarming Space
Despite its unassuming exterior, Akagane Resort Kyoto Higashiyama 1925 boasts a sprawling forest garden spanning 700 tsubo (1,860 square meters), harmonizing with the natural Higashiyama landscape. Restaurants and cafes are scattered throughout this lush setting. Optional lunch courses are available at Akagane or Hisui, where natural light spills from the garden's trees. (Tea time and dinner options are also available.) Copper and brass accents add sparkle to the space. Artwork depicting the aging process of copper, transitioning from akagane to greenish-blue, adorns the walls.
Lunch features a French course highlighting seasonal ingredients, reflecting Japan's four seasons.
Experience Higashiyama Across Two Eras via Nene-no-michi
Higashiyama is a top tourist destination in Kyoto, known for its historic temples and shrines. While many are open for public visits, some venues remain closed to the public, offering unique experiences rarely accessible.
Gesshin-in at Kodaiji Temple offers a peaceful retreat along Nene-no-michi, amidst the bustling crowds. Experience the serenity of Kyoto and rejuvenate your body and mind with a special session of zazen meditation, preparing you for what lies ahead.
In modern times, numerous literary figures and businessmen have established their private residences in Higashiyama. Discover the enduring charm of this area at Gesshin-in and Akagane Resort, offering a unique perspective of Kyoto.
