About the Region
Relax in the Historic Onsen Town of Yugawara with an Overnight Stay at Fukiya Ryokan
Yugawara, a peaceful hot-spring town neighboring Hakone has been famed for its soothing onsen waters for hundreds of years, with its hot springs even mentioned in the Manyoshu, an ancient collection of Japanese waka poetry. Yugawara’s beginnings as an onsen resort began during the Edo Period (1603-1868), when it was ranked among the finest in Japan. Yugawara is a tranquil hideaway easily accessible in about 90 minutes by train from Tokyo Station. Away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Hakone, it offers a serene atmosphere where you can relax and truly unwind your body and mind.
Fukiya Ryokan is a traditional Japanese ryokan inn with a long history in Yugawara that has evolved to suit its guests through the years. From the moment when you first enter the building, you will notice the emphasis on Japanese aesthetics in the building’s decor and architecture combined with a desire to provide guests with every modern convenience and comfort. One of the ryokan’s most recent additions is a rooftop terrace with a footbath that opened in 2021.

A Stay with a Sense of Place
Discover Fukiya: Artistry, Architecture, and Seven Healing Waters
At Fukiya, you are welcomed into a refined sanctuary where traditional Sukiya architecture is thoughtfully enriched with Nordic design and fine antiques. Designed for true comfort, the guest rooms are furnished with iconic pieces by masters such as Finn Juhl, Ole Wanscher, and Ib Kofod-Larsen. Here, you can experience a peaceful stay surrounded by timeless Japanese craftsmanship.

Beyond the guest rooms, the entire ryokan serves as a living gallery of master artisans. Throughout the spaces, works by world-renowned figures—including architect Kengo Kuma, 12th-generation Soutetsu Nakamura, and paper artist Eriko Horiki—are seamlessly integrated. Surrounding you with curated art and traditional technique, Fukiya allows you to touch and feel art in your daily stay.

Complementing its architectural depth, Fukiya is an ideal retreat for families, featuring seven unique Onsen baths. Beyond in-room baths, enjoy spacious communal Onsen and scenic private open-air baths on the third floor and rooftop. With clear, skin-gentle waters that warm you to the core, open-air rock baths, and a cozy lounge, guests of all ages can relax together in comfort.

Pre-Selected Rooms

Your suite also includes a private terrace where you can sit indoors or outdoors to admire the room’s real masterpiece: its private Japanese garden. Featuring a stone lantern amidst a dry garden surrounded by trees and plants, this garden is beautiful throughout the year as it changes with the seasons. And for the duration of your stay, it is all yours.

Your suite is also equipped with an onsen bath where you can relax and unwind. The bathtub is made of cypress, which is known for its fragrant aroma brought out by the warmth of the water. Enjoy this private bath throughout your stay. You may also, of course, make use of the facility’s large public bath and rooftop footbath. Fukiya Ryokan also offers complimentary use of diapers in various sizes and baby supplies, allowing guests traveling with small children or infants to enjoy a worry-free stay.

Choose a 4- or 6-hour charter with a private vehicle and guide, with flexible pick-up and drop-off locations and a route tailored to your interests, pace, and schedule.
Travel comfortably between Hakone’s scenic spots without the hassle of navigating public transportation or driving yourself. Whether you are traveling with heavy luggage or young children, the private charter makes it easy to visit multiple sights in a single day.

For example, you might choose to walk the historic stone-paved paths of the Old Tokaido road and visit the Hakone Checkpoint to uncover how this strategic gateway helped maintain over two centuries of peace. Continue by private vehicle along the scenic Ashinoko Skyline to Mikuni Pass, stopping at viewpoints along the way to admire Mount Fuji overlooking Lake Ashi.
Whether you are interested in ancient history, volcanic landscapes, or cultural stops such as the Hakone Open-Air Museum, your guide can adjust the route to suit your interests, the weather, and your schedule, making it easy to experience more of Hakone in comfort.
Enjoy a Memorable Tour of Hakone with a Relaxing Stay in Yugawara
While Yugawara has been considered one of the best onsen resorts in Japan since the Edo period, it is also slightly off the beaten track from the rest of Hakone. To reach Lake Ashinoko from Yugawara, small back roads wind their way up dramatically into the highlands of Hakone through the dense forests of the region. Ask your driver to stop en route if you’d like to enjoy expansive views overlooking Yugawara and Sagami Bay.

As for your stay at Fukiya Ryokan, it may prove to be one of your more memorable experiences in Japan. While the ryokan preserves and celebrates traditional Japanese ryokan culture in its overall design and attention to the needs of its guests, the incorporation of modern creative inspiration gives the place a unique quality all its own. And after experiencing gourmet meals, a private Japanese garden, and a private onsen bath, the only question left will be: when will you be coming back?
