Discover Atami, Your Perfect Secluded Seaside Getaway in Izu
With seaside cliffs providing dramatic views across the Pacific Ocean, Atami has long been a favorite weekend retreat for residents of Tokyo and Yokohama. Connections by road and rail are extremely convenient, with the shinkansen (Hikari and Kodama only) reaching Atami in just 45 minutes from Tokyo Station. Atami is also the gateway to the spectacular east coast of the Izu Peninsula, which looks out across Sagami Bay to the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
Visit Picturesque Lake Ashinoko Amidst the Highlands of Hakone
On certain days with just the right balance of blue sky and white mist, Mount Fuji almost seems to float in the air over Lake Ashinoko. Along with the red gate of the lakeside Hakone Shrine, the lake and the mighty mountain have captured the imaginations of travelers for hundreds of years, featuring in countless ukiyo-e woodblock prints, postcards, and Instagram photos. Hakone is also known for its fascinating history as a post town on the Old Tokaido Road, as well as its abundance of art museums and galleries.

Deepen Your Connection to the Region
Explore the Spectacular Highlands of Hakone Around Lake Ashinoko with a Tour by Private Car
Your journey begins at Atami Station or Odawara Station, where you will be picked up by private car and driven up into the highlands of Hakone. An expert guide will accompany you throughout the tour to provide information on the history, art, and natural beauty of Hakone, as well as answering any questions that you might have. The centerpiece of this region is Lake Ashinoko, a long slender crater lake surrounded by lush verdant forests. On clear days, Mount Fuji can be seen rising above the northwest end of the lake, beautiful in any season but particularly striking in winter or spring with its pure white snowcap.

As this is your tour, the places you would like to visit are entirely up to you. One highly recommended sight is the lakeside Hakone Shrine. The shrine’s red torii gate, which stands in the shallows of the lake itself, provides one of the region’s most iconic views. Mount Fuji is best seen from the south end of the lake, where you can also visit the site of the historic Hakone Checkpoint. During the Edo period (1603-1868), this was the top of a major mountain pass on the old Tokaido Road between Tokyo and Kyoto, with the road checkpoint marking the frontier of Kanto to travelers heading east or west.

Other scenic spots include Owakudani, a valley where steam vents and bubbling hot pools are a reminder that this actively volcanic region still has a lot going on under the ground. On the hills above Lake Ashinoko, the pampas grass of the Sengokuhara fields sways in the wind like ripples on a pond. Pleasant green in summer, the grass fields transform to brilliant gold in autumn. You may also choose to visit Hakone’s intriguing art museums, including the Hakone Open-Air Museum, Hakone Lake Ashi Narukawa Museum of Art, Hakone Museum of Art, Pola Museum of Art, and Hakone Venetian Glass Museum.

- Tour can be arranged on either Day 1 or Day 2 after checkout.
- Please select a start time for your tour (earliest start time 9:00 AM, latest start time at least four hours before your check-in time).
- Tours last approximately 3.5 hours.
- Tours are customizable. You can choose your destinations on the day.
- It is most likely that two destinations can be visited during the tour, though this may vary due to traffic, weather, or the amount of time spent at each spot.
- In the event of rain or other inclement weather, the tour can shift primarily to indoor attractions such as museums.
Travel from the Mountains of Hakone to the Coast and Relax in Your Luxury Suite by the Sea
On your tour by private car through the Hakone Highlands, you will experience an astonishing range of landscapes. From the bubbling volcanic pools of Owakudani to the glistening waters of Lake Ashinoko to the dense forests and swaying grasslands of Sengokuhara, you will see more variety in one day than you ever thought possible in Japan. Visiting the Hakone Shrine along with one or more of the area’s art museums gives insight into the history and culture of the region.

A short drive will bring you from the mountains to the sea, where spending the night at UMITO Atami Bettei offers far more than just an overnight stay in a nice hotel beside the ocean. The cliffside location and unique open design of its suites provide a sense of oneness with the world around you, as if you are not only observing but a part of it. It is a special place that will give you, and the people you care about most, lasting memories of the deep connection between the land of Japan and the sea.
