Overview

Sumo is both a traditional cultural activity and a national sport in Japan, with a rich history dating back to the 8th century as recorded in the Kojiki (completed in 712) and Nihonshoki (completed in 720). During the Edo period (1603-1868), the current form of Sumo was established. This experience offers the opportunity to visit a Sumo stable in Tokyo early in the morning to witness active rikishi (Sumo wrestlers) in training. You will be accompanied by an escort guide who will provide insight into the history and highlights of Sumo both before and after practice, making it possible for you to fully appreciate Sumo even if you have no prior knowledge of the sport.

Key Features

  • Experience the morning training sessions of active rikishi at a Tokyo Sumo stable
  • Witness the impressive power and skill of the rikishi up close during the practice sessions
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of Sumo, as an escort guide will provide you with detailed explanations of the practice before and after the session
  • Please note that this experience is unavailable during the Grand Sumo Tournament periods (Honbasho).

*The sumo training is viewed in a mixed group, but Wabunka guests are accompanied by their own private guide throughout.

Details

Enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere of Tokyo’s downtown area and pay a visit to a Sumo stable

The Sumo stables are concentrated in the surrounding area of Sumida Ward, Tokyo, as the Ryogoku Kokugikan, Japan’s national Sumo stadium, is located there. The specific stable you will be visiting will be determined by the date of your tour, and you will receive confirmation of which stable you will visit about a week before the tour.

Many Sumo stables are concentrated in the downtown area around Ryogoku Kokugikan, Japan’s national Sumo stadium.

While most Sumo stable morning practice tours are large group tours with only one guide, this Wabunka experience offers an escort guide exclusively for your group. The Sumo ring is considered a sacred place, and talking or making noise during the tour is strictly forbidden. As a result, your escort guide will provide you with detailed instructions on how to enjoy the morning practice session before the tour begins.

The tension and power of the Sumo wrestlers will take your breath away

Finally, the time has come to observe the morning practice. The Sumo stable is filled with a solemn atmosphere, and the sounds of the wrestlers' bodies colliding and their feet scraping against the ring reverberate throughout the room. An observation area is provided right next to the ring*, allowing you to witness every moment of the awe-inspiring spectacle that unfolds before your eyes.

*On the day of the tour, you will be seated in the designated observation area. However, if you register more than one month in advance or depending on the stable you wish to visit, chairs may be available.

You can even hear the wrestlers breathing

While the excitement of the event may make you want to express your thoughts and cheers, it is important to refrain from doing so during practice. In the world of Sumo, there are strict rules during practice to preserve the traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. If you have any questions, you can discreetly write them down and share them with your escort guide or ask them after the experience.

Suriashi (a sliding feet footwork technique) practice is essential for strengthening the lower body

Interact with rikishi at the end of the experience

Following the morning practice, you can have the opportunity to talk and take photos with the rikishi. Despite their serious demeanor during practice, the wrestlers are amiable and charming outside the ring, and are always more than happy to smile and pose for photos with you.

For the Sumo wrestlers, the "dohyo" is a sacred fighting ground

Once you leave the stable, you will head back to the nearest station with your escort guide. It will be a good time to talk about what you have just seen.

I rate everything to the maximum level because we were so thoroughly pleased with the experience that it made it worth the cost. The entire experience was memorable and greatly exceeded our expectations. Our guide was absolutely wonderful. She provided us so much backstory and history that it truly made the experience memorable. It felt like we got a behind the scenes look into Japanese culture and life of these young men. That detail really helps make the experience so much more memorable. I would highlight how close you are to the action. Lastly I would the exposure to the athletes once the practice was concluded. We are very grateful for this experience and would definitely look into additional Wabunka activities should we return to Japan on a future trip.

Very special. I felt like we were visitors at a private home, very intimate and special. You are literally feet away from the wrestlers. The information about sumo prior to entering the stables was so helpful in creating a full understanding of the experience.

M.M. United States

We were lucky enough to see the yokozuna join the Sumo training we attended, it was a really special moment and we could tell how lucky we were thanks to the expression of surprise and joy of our guide, her passion and true interest for the sport and the sumo world was genuine and it was very pleasant and informative to talk with her and learn about it. We were able to learn about so many details that we couldn't imagine if we were there only by ourselves.

C.N. France

It was a great experience. Very real look into a sumo stable.

R.S. United States

It was incredible. The Sumo experience was amazing as well as sushi making. The Sumo culture has always fascinated us and we were wowed.

K.W. United States

Fascinating, insightful and unmissable. Could not fault any of it, the whole experience was seamless. We were a little nervous that having a translator/guide at the sumo wrestling would make us stand out like a sore thumb, but she was so gracious and discreet. Her knowledge of the sumo wrestling and the stable we were at was so broad and interesting. It taught us a lot more about sumo, and gave us a much deeper respect for it.

E.M. Ireland

The encounter with the sumo and our guide who did an amazing job to facilitate this encounter before / during / after.

A.M. Monaco

Awesome - a close up that lets you into the very human nature of Sumodo and the shear physical and mental strength of the Sumo wrestler. An outstanding experience and the guide was amazing. She was an outstanding host - explained everything and set us up for a great experience of Sumodo. Significantly - Understanding the history of Sumo and the life of a Sumo wrestler revealed once again the significance of the "spirits" in Japan.

L.G. Australia

Our guide was very nice. We learnt about Sumo.

A.R. Germany

We loved every minute of this experience! The entire experience was so special! This felt very special because it was both an ancient and a living art - there is so much history to learn, but you are also able to see modern practitioners translate the knowledge and strategy of the generations that had come before them. Unlike anything else I’ve ever done! This experience was so much more than just a “sport” practice. The dedication and commitment of the wrestlers was just incredible. I have to admit that the most memorable moment was probably when one of the wrestlers almost fell onto my mom and the guide - and then so kindly came over after the training to check on them! We were so impressed by the strength and the gracefulness of the wrestlers. The guide was such a wealth of knowledge - we LOVED having the board she brought along to share our questions and for her to write observations throughout the training. She was an amazing guide and we had the best time. I would tell any friends coming to Tokyo to absolutely take this tour and to ask for her !

M.M. United States

Excellent experience all around! The tour of the sumo stable was fantastic, and the interpreter was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and she really helped us to understand Sumo with her discussion and materials. A unique opportunity to learn about a key cultural aspect of Japanese life, and to watch dedicated athletes do their training.

F.W. United States

Cool.

L.K. United States

Outstanding. The experience gave me better insight into Japanese culture.
