Sakai: A City of Culture Where Life and History Intertwine
Located in southern Osaka Prefecture, Sakai has prospered as an overseas-trade port since ancient times. As a city, it cultivated a unique artisan culture and played a significant role in shaping Japanese culture, producing figures such as Sen no Rikyu, a leading figure in the world of the tea ceremony. Easily accessible from Kansai International Airport or central Osaka City, Sakai is a uniquely charming place where history and everyday life intersect at every step.
Sakai is home to many traditional crafts, including forged blades and cast metalwork. Metalworking techniques have developed over centuries here with craftsmen specializing in each individual stage of the production process, which helps sustain a high standard of quality while ensuring practicality. The techniques refined for the creation of both everyday and professional items can be seen today all throughout the city of Sakai.

The Craftsmanship Culture of Sakai, a City of Artisans
This experience draws on Sakai’s long-standing tradition of craftsmanship by offering a stay at Sakainoma Hotel Hama, a renovated residence from the early Showa period (1926–1989), which once belonged to a foundry merchant. Here, guests experience firsthand the legacy of commerce and daily life embedded in a historic locale. A foundry “casts” metal by melting it and pouring it into molds where it cools and takes shape. This method has produced a wide variety of objects used in daily life and religious practices, including kettles, temple bells, and household items. The accumulated knowledge and skills of Sakai craftsmen, developed over generations, form the foundation of the city’s rich culture of craftsmanship.

This plan also offers a selection of optional experiences to make your stay perfect. These include gold leaf application led by a certified artisan involved in the production of Osaka Buddhist altars, and a snowflake-pattern tie-dye workshop using traditional wazarashi processed fabric. Through these hands-on activities, guests gain a deeper understanding of Sakai craftsmanship and its cultural context. By engaging directly with the city’s traditions, you can experience how Sakai’s craftsmanship is woven into everyday life in this corner of Osaka.
A Stay with a Sense of Place
Sakainoma Hotel Hama: A Uniquely Sakai Stay in a Historic Residence
Sakainoma Hotel Hama is a restored former merchant residence, revived with the goal of preserving a local asset for future generations after years of it standing empty and unused. Registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, it’s an important historical locale that has retained its original design and atmosphere while incorporating modern amenities to provide the level of comfort found in modern luxury accommodations.

Check-in takes place at Fukui Kiyoshi Shouten, a cast metal shop operated by the hotel’s owner and located next to the accommodation. The interior displays a wide range of products, and handling them allows guests to directly experience the texture and heft of foundry goods, a uniquely local experience.

This Wabunka-exclusive plan also includes an owner-guided tour of the property. Beyond a simple introduction of the facility, the tour reveals how the building has been used over time, the life and work of a foundry merchant, and the meaning behind the design elements that remain throughout the space. Pay close attention to oft-missed touches like the ingenious design of the pillars and fittings, as well as the wisdom embedded in the daily life in old Sakai, deepening your understanding of Japanese architecture in the process. By learning about the history of the accommodation, you’ll also gain a greater appreciation for the atmosphere and flow of time that Sakainoma Hotel Hama offers guests.
The Quiet, Peaceful Atmosphere of a Hamadera Residence
Sakainoma Hotel Hama is located in the Hamadera area, which flourished as a major resort destination from the Taisho Period (1912 – 1926) through the early Showa Period. Following the opening of Hamadera Beach in 1906, Ohama and Hamadera drew large crowds and became home to ryotei (Japanese-style restaurants) and ryokan inns. A great number of writers and artists visited the area, with many ultimately deciding to live here.
As the area developed into a residential district, Osaka merchants started establishing villas and private residences here. Sakainoma Hotel Hama, which preserves that historic, refined way of life, has been nationally registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan not only for its architectural beauty, but also for its role in safeguarding the history and culture of Hamadera.

Inside the hotel, you’ll come across shoin-style traditional architectural elements and other period fittings that create a space where time passes quietly. Views of the inner garden and bathing facilities featuring a cast-metal tub add to the relaxed, balanced, and comfortable atmosphere of Sakainoma Hotel Hama. As the entire property is reserved for one group of guests, you can control how you spend your time here without worrying about other people. The stay itself becomes an opportunity to interact with Sakai’s everyday and commercial heritages that have taken root in this part of Osaka. A popular local bakery, just a 5-minute walk away, opens at 7:30 AM and is highly recommended for breakfast.

Deepen Your Connection to the Region
Learn the Art of Gold-Leafing from a Certified Traditional Craftsman (Additional Option)
An optional experience available with this plan is a gold-leafing workshop led by a craftsman specializing in Osaka Buddhist altars, an integral part of local culture. Distinguished by the harmony between the deep luster of black lacquer and the gold leaf that softly reflects light, the altars are refined works of precision craftsmanship that create an atmosphere of solemn, quiet elegance. During this experience, you will learn directly from certified traditional craftsman Tetsuya Kurosawa, gaining the rare opportunity to handle gold leaf firsthand while exploring the techniques behind the material’s creation.

Gold leaf is created by hammering real gold until it becomes extremely thin. But within this miniscule thickness resides a brilliance and durability you would not expect. In Japan, gold leaf has long been used for Buddhist ritual objects, folding screens, and architectural ornamentation because of how long the material lasts and how distinguished it can make something look. During this experience, you’ll learn the techniques and precise movements required to perfectly apply gold leaf, acquiring deeper insight into this traditional craft.

During this experience, you’ll be working with Sakai forged blade handle wood, a traditional craft of the city. These materials were originally meant to be used by chefs and help in the creation of everyday meals. With the use of gold leaf techniques developed during the production of Buddhist altars, you’ll be able to transform the wood and give it new meaning. The gold-leafing experience combines two Sakai traditions into a one-of-a-kind single-stem flower vase that goes beyond simple craftmaking. As the vase gets infused with a part of yourself, it becomes a connection between the many cultures of these lands. The finished piece is yours to keep, allowing you to take a piece of Sakai back home with you.
Feel the Soft Texture of Wazarashi Fabric During a Hands-on Dyeing Experience (Additional Option)
The second option is a workshop using wazarashi-processed fabric—a technique passed down in Sakai for over 400 years since the Edo Period (1603 – 1868)—and sekka-shibori dyeing, which produces symmetrical snowflake/flower-like tie-dye patterns. Wazarashi processing softens and whitens cotton and has long been used in the production of tenugui decorative towels and yukata summer kimonos. Sekka-shibori involves folding the fabric into triangular shapes before dyeing, which creates repeating patterns that spread like a kaleidoscope. The final look varies greatly depending on the folding and dyeing technique, making it a highly nuanced process. At the Kadono Sarashizome studio, which is dedicated to spreading awareness about the wonders of wazarashi, you can engage directly with expert artisans and learn this traditional craft firsthand.

This plan offers guests exclusive use of the studio, providing an environment where you can focus on the dyeing at your own pace without distractions. In addition to a tenugui towel, this Wabunka-exclusive experience also includes the opportunity to dye a handkerchief.

The exhilaration of unfolding the freshly dyed fabric and the joy of witnessing the unexpected patterns are unique pleasures of this traditional handicraft. Each finished piece captures your state of mind in that particular moment, preserving the memories of your journey so you can revisit them in the future.
A Journey of Self-Discovery Through Traditional Japanese Handicrafts and Everyday Life
Spend time in a historic mansion and work with artisans using your own hands to create a piece of Japanese heritage. Through these experiences, you’ll realize that Sakai’s culture isn’t merely something you find on display in museums but something that continues to thrive to this day.

By experiencing not only the visible beauty of Sakai’s crafts but also the philosophy and history behind them, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for local culture and take home a lasting memento of your time here.
