Founded in the early 17th century by tea master Kanamori Sowa, the Sowa school introduced a new sense of aesthetics to the Imperial Court. This experience takes place in the Isshiso tea room, located within the private residence of Soukou Udagawa, 18th-generation head of the Sowa school. The tea gathering, or chaji, is considered the heart of the tea ceremony—an art of hospitality expressed through a progression of rituals including charcoal preparation, kaiseki cuisine, and thick and thin tea. As the 18th-generation head of the Sowa school, Udagawa carries on centuries of tradition while also creating new expressions of tea for modern life. He offers a diverse range of tea programs, from authentic, wabi-inspired chaji centered on the traditional ichiju-issai (one soup, one dish) meal to evening chaji featuring chahan-gama, a tea gathering centered around cooking rice in an iron kettle, as well as experiences incorporating original cocktails. These programs are thoughtfully tailored to different settings and purposes, including Sokkon Minami-Aoyama and Yobanashi Sahan.
