Inami, a Town Shaped by Woodcarving
While Nanto is perhaps best known for Gokayama, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also home to Inami, one of Japan’s foremost woodcarving towns. The craft flourished following the reconstruction of Inami Betsuin Zuisenji Temple, when master artisans from Kyoto were invited to work on the temple's elaborate decorations. Over the centuries, their techniques were passed down through generations and became an integral part of the town's identity.
Where Traditional Craft Meets Contemporary Living
Bed and Craft is built on the idea that traditional craftsmanship should not only be admired, but also experienced through daily use. Housed in renovated former residences throughout Inami, the villas preserve the character of the original buildings while incorporating contemporary comfort. Through its unique "My Gallery" concept, local artisans collaborate in the design of each property, incorporating woodcarving, lacquerware, and other traditional crafts into contemporary living spaces.

Deepen Your Connection to the Region
Private Night Tour of Inami Betsuin Zuisenji Temple
While helping rebuild the temple after repeated fires, local artisans learned advanced carving techniques from master craftsmen in Kyoto, laying the foundation for the tradition that continues in the town today.

Exclusively for Wabunka guests, this private evening tour offers the rare opportunity to explore the temple after hours. Illuminated at night, the carvings reveal dramatic shadows and remarkable details that are often overlooked during the day. Accompanied by a local woodcarving artisan, guests will gain deeper insight into the techniques, history, and craftsmanship behind one of Japan's most celebrated woodcarving traditions.

Craft Your Very Own Wooden Spoon or Pair of Lacquered Chopsticks with a Master Artisan (Additional Option)
Woodcarvings from Inami are known for depicting incredibly elaborate and intricately detailed scenes, depicting animals, birds, humans, fantastical creatures, and more. Objects range from tiny utensils up to large wooden screens and reliefs used in traditional Japanese buildings, including temples such as Inami Betsuin Zuisenji Temple. Local artisans use nothing but hand tools like chisels, hammers and knives to shape wood from trees such as camphor, paulownia, and zelkova into splendid works of art.

The best way to appreciate this local woodworking tradition is to try it yourself. To provide this opportunity, Bed and Craft has established connections with local Inami artisans who welcome you into their workshops for a hands-on woodcrafting experience. The workshop that you will visit for your experience is called Tomoru Studio, located just 10 minutes on foot from OUKA.

Through this exclusive Wabunka offer, you can choose to craft either a wooden spoon or pair of lacquered wooden chopsticks at the workshop. Tomoru Studio was founded in 2008 by woodcarver Komei Tanaka and his wife Sanae, who specializes in lacquerware art. If you decide to make a wooden spoon, Komei will show you how to design your piece and shape it with a carving knife, then finish it with natural beeswax. To make lacquerware chopsticks with Sanae, you will learn to mix and knead lacquer and pigment and apply it to the wood before setting your chopsticks to dry.

Please note that while wooden spoons can be taken with you on the day of the experience, lacquered chopsticks will be shipped to you later, as they require approximately two weeks of drying. International shipping is available (additional fees apply).

Where Craftsmanship Remains a Part of Daily Life
A stay at Bed and Craft offers more than comfortable accommodation. Through its collaboration with local artisans, the villas provide opportunities to encounter Inami's craft traditions not as museum pieces, but as a living part of everyday life. Woodcarving, lacquerware, architecture, and design come together to create an experience deeply connected to the culture of the region.

Whether admiring the illuminated carvings of Inami Betsuin Zuisenji Temple, staying in a villa shaped by local craftsmanship, or creating your own wooden spoon or lacquered chopsticks, each experience offers a different perspective on Inami's creative heritage. Together, they reveal a tradition that continues to evolve while remaining rooted in generations of skill and dedication.
