A Sumi-e Artist With Collaborations Spanning Luxury Brands and Top Musicians
This experience is led by Tsuchiya Shukou, a sumi-e artist known for collaborations with luxury brands and top musicians worldwide. He blends traditional ink painting with modern materials like fluorescent acrylic and spray paint, creating a unique pop-art-inspired style that redefines monochrome sumi-e.
Tsuchiya began sumi-e at 18 and achieved mastery within two years. Driven by a desire to make ink painting more accessible, he developed a style blending traditional and modern materials. His approach not only pushes the boundaries of sumi-e but also redefines its value in contemporary art. This experience, guided by Tsuchiya, offers a fresh take on ink painting, distinct from typical classes available elsewhere.
The Art of Ink Painting in a Sophisticated Wine Cellar
The experience is held at THE CELLAR Toranomon Main Store, a specialty wine store established in 1999. Guided by the mission to "bring joy through wine," THE CELLAR curates unique selections from around the world, with over 2,500 varieties in stock. Knowledgeable staff are on hand to help you find the perfect bottle, and the collection includes rare and premium wines, allowing you to explore the vast world of wine on every visit.
Experience ink painting while savoring THE CELLAR’s finest seasonal wines, thoughtfully selected by expert staff. The sensory richness of wine will help you unwind, and the refined atmosphere of the wine cellar sets the perfect stage for creative expression. Even if you’re new to ink painting, you’ll find it easy and enjoyable in this relaxed setting.
Master the Basics of Ink Painting with Tsuchiya’s Guidance
In this ink painting experience, Tsuchiya will begin with a demonstration on brush handling and an introduction to essential tools—ink, inkstone, and brush. He’ll also guide you in using your upper body, as sumi-e requires a certain physical engagement. For his demonstration, Tsuchiya will paint seasonal Japanese flowers, including his signature peony. You may also request a subject suitable for a brief painting session.
Tsuchiya’s brushwork is captivating, completing each piece in moments. Stay focused to catch every detail—observe the brush movement, rhythm, ink shading, and body motion.
Tsuchiya carefully selects all the tools for this ink painting experience, ensuring they're beginner-friendly. While sumi-e brushes are typically made from various animal hairs, such as sheep, horse, rabbit, and raccoon, you’ll use brushes made from horse tail hair, which offers an ideal level of stiffness. The ink, called "yuenboku," is made from soot produced by burning vegetable oils. Its slightly brownish hue is perfect for soft, delicate expressions.
Explore Modern Ink Painting Beyond the Classics
Once you’ve learned the basics, you’ll create your own ink painting. Before starting, you’ll begin with a brief meditation to clear your mind and focus. Sit upright, breathe deeply as Tsuchiya guides you, and then start grinding the ink. You’ll find that the meditation sharpens your senses, making the scent of the ink more vivid.
Once your ink is ready, start practicing drawing straight lines with the brush. Keep Tsuchiya's tips in mind and try a few lines. It might feel awkward at first, but with practice, you'll improve.
For your actual artwork, you'll create an abstract painting on thick paperboard. If abstract painting feels challenging at first, don't worry—Tsuchiya has a unique technique using folded paper as a brush. This method lets you create artistic lines effortlessly, so feel free to give it a try.
The subject of your work is open to your personal interpretation, allowing you to freely express your ideas. If you're unsure, you can explore images with Tsuchiya to inspire your creativity. This experience of relaxing your mind and letting your creativity flow often leads to surprising expressions. One unique aspect of sumi-e is the unpredictable nature of the ink, such as how it spreads depending on the day's humidity. As Tsuchiya says, "The right answer happens by chance."
Break Preconceptions and Discover the Essence of Sumi-e
This experience offers a fresh perspective on sumi-e, a classical art form, revealing its new charm and depth. Tsuchiya welcomes guests with warmth, saying, "You might think sumi-e is difficult to approach, but once you try it, you'll find it's a familiar and accessible art. Let go of your preconceptions and enjoy it freely."
This is a rare opportunity to create abstract art with sumi-e. Focusing your mind and bringing the intangible to life will be a rewarding experience that nurtures your artistic sensibility. Why not explore the true joy of ink painting with Tsuchiya?
