Bridging Nishijin Weaving With the Future
This experience takes place at Yuiitsumuni, a 100-year-old Kyoto townhouse in a quiet residential area of Kitaoji, north of central Kyoto. Renovated into a chic, modern Japanese gallery, it serves as a hub for the kimono manufacturer SCOPE COCO and hosts experiences by the high-end kimono rental store SHOSA.
SCOPE COCO evolved from the historic weaving house Kano family, which has long been involved in Nishijin weaving. This intricate craft involves various specialized processes, with the Kano family acting as the producer coordinating them all. Founded by Kanji Kano, a descendant of the Kano family, SCOPE COCO continues to create leading kimono designs that blend innovation with tradition.
The luxury kimono rental brand SHOSA was founded on the idea that visitors to Kyoto should experience wearing an authentic Nishijin-ori kimono. Nishijin-ori is renowned for its unique beauty and high quality, rooted in history and culture. By immersing yourself in this blend of tradition and innovation, you'll experience Japanese aesthetics and the exceptional craftsmanship behind these kimonos.
Each Kimono and Obi Are Unique
Your experience begins with a detailed lecture on the basics and history of kimonos, including the Nishijin-ori you will wear.
Nishijin-ori is a high-quality silk fabric woven in the Nishijin area of Kyoto. Renowned for its intricate patterns and vibrant colors, it plays a vital role in preserving Japan's traditional culture. The elegant and graceful designs, crafted from silkworm silk threads, have captivated many with their beauty and sophistication.
Nishijin-ori is primarily hand-woven by skilled craftsmen, requiring time and expertise to create its complex patterns. Each stage, from dyeing to design, is handled by specialized artisans, giving each piece a unique expression and personality. You can truly feel the soul of its maker in every fabric.
Blending Intricate Craftsmanship With Beautiful Designs
After the lecture, you'll select your kimono and begin the dressing process. SHOSA offers a wide variety of colors and patterns, and, unlike other rental options, exclusively provides pure silk kimonos made from 100% silk from silkworm cocoons. Enjoy the luxurious feel and elegant shine of silk, and gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty and sophistication of kimonos.
In summer, most people wear a yukata, a casual kimono made of cotton or linen. However, at SHOSA, you can wear a pure silk kimono suitable for formal occasions in any season. Pure silk is breathable, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Enjoy an authentic kimono experience.
Knowledgeable staff with kimono qualifications will assist you in choosing the right kimono. While it’s great to pick a color or pattern you love, they can help you find one that suits you best. Choosing a design you like and a color that complements you will make you look beautiful. Additionally, selecting a color and pattern that fit the season and occasion will enhance your overall look.
Wearing Traditional Japanese Elegance
Wearing a kimono properly requires skill, as it needs to be adjusted for your height and body type to ensure a comfortable fit. Dressing yourself can be difficult for beginners. In this experience, you can relax and enjoy wearing the kimono while a qualified dresser assists you.
When wearing a kimono, accessories and hairstyle are key. Choosing accessories that match the color and design of your kimono creates a balanced and elegant look. This plan includes everything you need: a complete kimono set, accessories, sandals, and a bag, so you can fully embrace authentic Japanese style.
A professional stylist will handle your hairstyle, creating the look you want. You can also choose the color of the obijime (braided obi accessory) and hair accessories such as kanzashi (ornamental hairpins), so feel free to customize your hairstyle to your taste.
After getting dressed, enjoy a photo shoot with a professional photographer based on your preferences. You can take pictures in the gallery or the garden. Wearing a kimono in the serene garden of a traditional Kyoto machiya lets you experience the beauty of nature and the Japanese spirit that appreciates the changing seasons.
Experience the Beauty and History of Traditional Japanese Culture Firsthand
At the end of the experience, enjoy tea and sweets while relaxing and gazing at the garden. You can also take a stroll around Kyoto (with no accompanying guides) and return the kimono at your hotel. We recommend dining out in Kyoto wearing your kimono for a truly special day.
Kimonos are uniquely beautiful and dignified, featuring rich colors and delicate patterns. They not only enhance the wearer's beauty but also reflect Japan's traditions and history. Wearing a kimono lets you appreciate its patterns and origins while experiencing Japanese customs. Enjoy a special moment at SHOSA, where you can discover a real Nishijin-ori kimono and immerse yourself in the charm of Japanese culture and aesthetics.
