Bonsai as a Window into the Aesthetics of Japan

Coming face-to-face with a small antique pot holding a tiny tree from the mountains day after day, pouring time and attention into recreating nature in microcosm: this is the art of bonsai, often described as a living art form in which no work is ever truly complete. Bonsai is an iconic horticultural tradition of Japan which uniquely encapsulates the country’s spirituality and aesthetics, and has long fascinated people from all over the world with its profound, distinctive worldview. Today, the word “bonsai” has become a nearly universally understood loanword in languages across the globe.

“Moyogi” (informal upright) bonsai are an iconic classic style characterized by a twisting trunk line that seems to almost draw a pattern

Bonsai enthusiasts enjoy the art form in two different ways: cultivation and appreciation. For those who begin with appreciation, delving deeper into the art tends to eventually evoke a desire to display a favorite piece at home or even take up cultivation. Unfortunately, national and international regulations make transporting a living bonsai outside of Japan difficult – which is one reason why art bonsai have become an appealing alternative.

An Experience with the World of Bonsai Distilled into Handicraft

Art bonsai are handcrafted works created from greenery and such materials as washi paper, clay, and wire. In Japan and beyond, the craft has garnered a following for its maintenance-free bonsai that will never wither. Chikako Yoshimoto – who serves as the instructor in this experience plan – holds a qualification in flower coordination and is a licensed master of ikebana (the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement), and has studied floral arts both within Japan and internationally. She is also the purveyor of an art bonsai salon called “Art Bonsai Malle.”

Experience Instructor Chikako Yoshimoto

For international visitors, the appeal is obvious: art bonsai creates the opportunity to transform a hands-on encounter with the traditional beauty of bonsai into an art piece that can actually be taken home. As Yoshimoto puts it: “Art bonsai has the power to travel the world.” She adds: “I named my salon ‘Malle’ because it’s the French word for ‘trunk’ – as in, an essential companion for long voyages.” For overseas visitors in particular, I like to describe my art bonsai as lessons in ‘portable Japanese beauty.’ Through this experience too, I want guests to savor an extraordinary and soothing moment – and to take that memory home crystallized just as it is.”

Art bonsai so realistic you’d hardly know it isn’t alive

Tracing History in the Evolution of Antique Pots

Art bonsai begins with the pot, and this plan stands apart in that world by offering antiques. Yoshimoto is also deeply knowledgeable about antiques, and has this to say about their value in art bonsai: “Having already stood the test of time, these pots carry time in them that embodies the years normally required to grow bonsai. When planted in antiques, art bonsai transcends mere handicraft and becomes art.”

All antique pots in this experience are one-of-a-kind, and the time spent choosing them is also a moment to appreciate the Japanese philosophy of joy in presence in the ephemeral here and now

Participants select a pot from a collection of antiques curated by Yoshimoto. As an optional add-on, guests may also choose from higher-grade antique pots of greater value (additional fees apply on-site). During the experience, Yoshimoto also uses pieces from her own personal collection as examples in discussing the history and evolution of Japanese ceramics. This alone is a rare opportunity to get hands-on with Japanese pottery from various past eras.

Crafting a One-of-a-kind Art Bonsai of Your Own

In this experience, participants create a classic pine bonsai. After placing a base in your chosen antique pot, insert the roots, shape the tree, and create bark texture using washi paper and clay. When that is done, it’s time to add soil, apply moss, and then add coloring to the trunk or moss to evoke the appearance of an aged tree as you like. The final step is to shape the greenery into the piece’s final form. Real bonsai equipment like bonsai shears and yattoko pliers are used among the craft tools, fostering an even greater authenticity in the creation experience.

It’s easy to lose track of time altogether while shaping the ideal bonsai form

Yoshimoto’s work in art bonsai began with the loss of a cherished living bonsai that failed to thrive. Experimenting with this “bonsai that never withers,” she found herself drawn to its charm and has since become completely absorbed in the craft, which provides a different entry to a nonetheless equally full experience of a treasured tradition. Yoshimoto hopes that participants, too, will feel the depth of bonsai’s unique worldview and the aesthetics of Japan while creating their own one-of-a-kind piece by hand.

Finishing touches enhance the realism

Art Bonsai: A Modern Bridge to the Beauty, Tradition, and History of Japan

Yoshimoto’s art bonsai provides a profound sense of connection with nature, and a timeless and distinctly Japanese beauty through the use of antique pots that carry the marks of time and trees that never fade. Wherever in the world these works travel, they are sure to enrich the day-to-day with dignity and quiet joy that fosters peace and healing. And the experience of creating them is sure to be a memorable moment of discovery and insight about Japan in any travel itinerary. As an optional add-on, art bonsai creations can also be taken home in a traditional paulownia wood gift box (additional fees apply on-site).
