A Hotel that Melds with the Arashiyama Landscape
Arashiyama has long been known as a scenic locale where those seeking waterfront tranquility and soothing views gather to enjoy the seasonal atmosphere of the Katsura River and its nearby mountains. In the Heian period (794-1180), during which Kyoto was the national capital, Arashiyama was also a beloved getaway for the Imperial family and other nobles.
Beside Arashiyama’s iconic Togetsukyo Bridge sits globally acclaimed luxury hotel MUNI KYOTO. Awarded “4 pavilions” in the Michelin Guide Kyoto/Osaka + Okayama 2021, and “1 Key” in the Michelin Guide’s 2024 hotel selection, the facility’s layout and use of greenery along with the adjoining Fukuda Art Museum (opened in 2019), were designed for maximal continuity with Arashiyama’s historic natural landscape.
MUNI KYOTO strives for a “one of a kind” experience, seeking to preserve and elevate its Arashiyama locale so that the same harmony between history and nature survives another century into the future. It aims to give its guests unique memories that they’ll never forget, offering extraordinary dining with cuisine prepared by Ducasse Paris, founded by master of French cuisine Alain Ducasse, along with a luxurious spa, cozy guest rooms, and top tier hospitality.
Rooms that Blend Seamlessly into Arashiyama Views
A total of 21 luxury guest rooms harmonize pure gentle color with gorgeous panoramas of Arashiyama’s lush nature. Bask in the changing seasonal faces of Arashiyama’s famed beauty from the comfort of your room.
This plan features a stay in a Garden View room, where guests can experience a fusion of tradition and modernity bathed in gentle natural light. Sliding glass doors open on a terrace modeled after a riverbed garden complete with a gurgling stream, allowing you to seamlessly experience Japan’s traditional natural beauty.
As an optional add-on (extra charges apply), enjoy dinner at MUNI ALAIN DUCCASSE restaurant, awarded one star in the Michelin Guide. Enjoy a variety of special dishes crafted from an abundance of carefully sourced ingredients from Kyoto and wider Japan. Experience the world of acclaimed chef Alain Decasse through the luxurious space, elegant cuisine, and lavish service.
A Deeper Look, through Masterworks of Japanese Art
Wabunka’s exclusive stay experience includes a private viewing of the adjoining Fukuda Art Museum either before it opens or after it closes. This is a rare chance to enjoy the museum’s collection without distraction in privacy and peaceful quiet – a collection spanning some 2,000 Kyoto-centric works ranging from the Edo period (1603-1867) to modern art, including some that have never or rarely been seen in public elsewhere.
Both MUNI KYOTO and the Fukuda Art Museum were designed by award-winning architect Koichi Yasuda, built with harmony between nature and Japanese art as their foundational concept. As such, their architecture incorporates a fusion of simple traditional and modern minimalist Japanese design elements when viewed up close. Viewed from afar, the buildings blend into the landscape of Mount Ogura and the Togetsukyo Bridge. In 2023, they were chosen among Time Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places.
Broaden Your Knowledge of Japanese Art with a Curator-Guided Museum Tour
Fukuda Art Museum holds special exhibitions four times a year, drawn from a collection spanning diverse time periods. Depending on timing, you might for example see paintings by Kyoto-based artists who flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868), such as Ito Jakuchu and Maruyama Okyo. The museum also houses one of the largest collections in Japan of works by Taisho period (1912-1926) artist Takehisa Yumeji.
A Fukuda Art Museum specialist curator is your guide around the museum, sharing eye-opening insights on the works displayed. Delight in stories and information not featured in the captions or catalogue listings as you peruse. Let these masterworks catch you off guard with unexpected beauty, and then enjoy them all over again as your guide’s commentary opens new angles, discovering the true charm and thrilling depth of each piece in this exclusive experience.
On top of it all, find wagashi sweets waiting for you in your MUNI KYOTO guest room, made by historic Kyoto confectionery shop Oimatsu. These are original takes on traditional confectionery exclusive to this Wabunka plan, specially made to match the theme of each of the seasonal exhibits at Fukuda Art Museum. Delight in choice confectionery tradition while admiring Arashiyama panoramas.
Japanese Aesthetic Sensibilities and Natural Beauty with Deep Arashiyama Roots
MUNI KYOTO and the Fukuda Art Museum are uniquely situated in an environment resplendent with history, accented by their gorgeous architecture, heightened by the joys of traditional craft confectionery, and completed by the magnificent vistas of Arashiyama’s natural landscape. This plan fuses it all into one luxurious stay experience sure to inspire the soul, awaken the heart, and enliven the mind – whether you are an art aficionado or completely new to the art museum experience.
