Overview

Since ancient times, the Hakone pass has been considered the most arduous climb on the old Tokaido Road between Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto. Traditional ryokan inns were built to greet weary travelers with warm meals, soft beds, and the soothing waters of the local hot springs. In this exclusive Wabunka itinerary, you will stay at Matsuzakaya Honten, a historic ryokan established in 1662, and participate in a zazen and suizen meditation experience in the nearby Tokoan Hall of Kumano Shrine, accompanied by shakuhachi flute music played by a professional musician.

Key Features

・Situated on the Old Tokaido Road, Matsuzakaya Honten has welcomed travelers for over 360 years. Depicted in Utagawa Hiroshige’s ukiyo-e, this venerable inn has hosted the Imperial Family and prominent historical leaders, offering a timeless sanctuary of relaxation
・The ryokan features a private source yielding 200 liters per minute. This rare sulfur, sulfate, and bicarbonate "triple-blend" is provided as gensen kakenagashi (100% natural flow). To ensure peak quality, the water is used without any added water, heating, or circulation
・At the nearby Tokoan, guests can experience zazen and suizen meditation accompanied by live shakuhachi flute music (additional fee). Following this tranquil session, warm hojicha tea and seasonal Japanese confections are served

Ashinoyu: A Sacred Sanctuary of History and Healing

Ashinoyu is one of Hakone’s most profound historical sanctuaries. During the Kamakura period (1185–1333), the area around Shojin-ike Pond became a sacred site for Jizo worship, leaving behind an extraordinary collection of stone Buddhas and pagodas that are now designated as National Important Cultural Properties.

In 1662, this spiritual landscape was transformed into a renowned hot spring destination. Since then, Ashinoyu has been cherished by artists and monks alike as a place of healing and creative inspiration. It was this unique atmosphere that drew cultural figures to gather in the area for poetry and contemplation, a legacy that is still honored at nearby historic sites today.

Check into Matsuzakaya Honten, a Ryokan Inn in Operation for Over 360 Years

As the original cornerstone of Ashinoyu’s hospitality, Matsuzakaya Honten has welcomed travelers since the beginning of the area's development as a hot spring resort in 1662. Perched on the forested slopes above Lake Ashinoko, the picturesque nature of the ryokan inn Matsuzakaya Honten has drawn the eye of many artists throughout the centuries. Famed ukiyo-e painter Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) even captured Matsuzakaya Honten in his famous woodblock prints of Hakone’s stunning local landscapes.

A Stay with a Sense of Place

Living History in Every Room: Architecture and Seasonal Beauty

The guest rooms at Matsuzakaya Honten offer one of the most genuine traditional ryokan experiences in the region, transporting you back to a time when travelers on the old Tokaido Road would stop here en route to Kyoto or Edo for some much needed respite from their long journeys. Different rooms within the building were added at different times in the ryokan’s history, making repeat visits to the onsen a rewarding and illuminating experience, with rooms offering gorgeous views that change throughout the seasons.

The star attractions at Matsuzakaya Honten are the ryokan’s onsen (hot spring), which draw their water from the Ashinoyu onsen. Unlike many onsens that recirculate, filter, or dilute their water, Matsuzakaya Honten uses continuously flowing onsen known as gensen kakenagashi straight from the source to ensure the purest and most natural onsen experience for guests, including minerals with reputed health benefits, particularly for beautiful skin. Some rooms at Matsuzakaya Honten are equipped with private open-air onsen.

The Wabunka plan features a stay at "Shunpuso," a historic structure originally built as a private villa for the Iwasaki family (the founders of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu) and relocated to this site in 1925. Located on the second floor, this south-facing guest room is bathed in natural light and offers a spacious layout where the living area and bedroom are completely separate. Equipped with a private indoor hot spring bath, the room provides a serene and restorative environment within a setting of refined historical elegance.

Deepen Your Connection to the Region

Visit the Historic Site of Tokoan for Zazen Meditation, Accompanied by the Sound of a Traditional Shakuhachi Flute (Additional Option)

The samurai, scholars, and merchants of ages past discovered the pleasures of Hakone long before us, frequently making the trip from the shogun’s capital city to enjoy the rustic beauty, delicious food, and soothing hot springs of the region. Tokoan, a historic building on the site of Kumano Shrine in the small town of Ashinoyu, is thought to have been a place where people of that time would gather between dips in the local hot springs to relax, drink, eat, socialize, and be entertained.

With its simple construction and rustic thatched roof, Tokoan is at one with its humble surroundings

This historic building, just 3 minutes on foot from your accommodation at Matsuzakaya Honten, is surrounded by the tranquility of nature, the perfect spot to slow down for a moment and clear your mind. In this exclusive Wabunka experience, you will have the opportunity to learn the ancient Japanese meditation technique of zazen (seated meditation), followed by suizen (meditation to the sound of a shakuhachi flute).

Lose yourself in the timeless whisper of the shakuhachi

The shakuhachi music will be provided by master musician Lenzan Kudo, with the instrument’s hauntingly beautiful tones adding to your levels of concentration and mindfulness. If you want to try to learn how to play the shakuhachi, Lenzan will be happy to instruct you (additional fees apply). After your meditation, enjoy a quiet cup of hojicha tea with simple wagashi sweets (specific tea and sweets are subject to change).
